His whole body and mind was rebelling against it. He walked to the fridge and opened it. The light went on revealing its basic emptiness, only canned soda and beer. Neil chose the latter and tossed one to Devin then walked over to the breakfast table and sat down, Devin followed obediently and sat across from his student, snapping the tabs in sync and sipping the brew looking at each other. â€Å"That Traumerei sounded beautiful. That was your mom’s favorite. She told me that many times.† Devin moved the beer can in a circle over the black onyx table top waiting for Neil to say something. Neil said nothing, just watched the moving, circling can. He wanted to ask why he had remained in the lieutenants’ office, but he didn’t. â€Å"Tomorrow I’m moving back in. Case Study of Princes Terrace-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Case Study of The Princes Terrace. Answer: Introduction Eco-friendly, or biological, development is building a structure that is advantageous or non-unsafe to the earth, and asset proficient. Also called green building, this sort of development is productive in its utilization of neighborhood and inexhaustible materials, and in the vitality required to manufacture it, and the vitality created while being inside it (Kibert 2016). Eco-accommodating development has created in light of the learning that structures have a frequently negative effect upon our condition and our characteristic assets. This incorporates transporting materials hundreds or thousands of miles, which has a negative effect in the vitality required to transport them and furthermore in discharges of dangerous chemicals from an ineffectively planned building that makes and traps them. The Prince's Terrace has been intended to embody world initiative in practical private outline and development while keeping up a customary design blend of patios and mews. This project is a spearheading coordinated effort between driving private designer, Defense Housing Australia (DHA), Renewal SA and the Prince's Foundation for building group and these homes are anticipated to utilize half less vitality and half less consumable water than a commonplace urban townhouse with a carbon impression decreased by over 40% when contrasted with a standard house (Khashe et al. 2015). This project is a piece of the Bowden region of Adelaide, a re-rising internal city suburb mixing history, culture, manageability and group into a more astute approach to live. This project will exhibit the advantage of very much found and maintainable living, with a dream to impact DHA's future tasks, as well as to end up plainly a benchmark for private advancement in Australia. Needs definition The Princes Terrace Adelaide is a weighty coordinated effort between Defense Housing Australia, The Prince's Trust Australia and the State Government's Urban Renewal Authority (Renewal SA). The project means to take the best of customary, Australian plan and consolidates it with every one of the solaces of contemporary living. The patios plan to expand on the historical backdrop of terraced homes yet bring them into the future with ecologically agreeable and maintainable outline components. A portion of the principle feasible outline components that must be mulled over for advancement of the ecologically cognizant building are given as beneath: Dual perspective cross ventilation to all levels of the townhouses and to living level in the Mews, to energize latent ventilation more often than not. Roof fans are given all through the living zones and rooms to help stream of air (Wang, Toppinen and Juslin 2014). Air molding is given, however is zoned to limit its utilization to just where and when fundamental. Energy effective LED lighting all through with larger amounts of lighting at undertaking zones just (kitchen benchtops and washrooms). High execution exterior framework, including elite coating and broad outer shading, will be consolidated to lessen the requirement for ventilating use and enhance inhabitant comfort. 5kW PV frameworks to townhouses and mews (Gibbs and ONeill 2015). Recycled water is given to all latrine ranges, clothing and for water system. Materiality is an essential part of this project, with normal, solid and neighborhood materials chose over any options where conceivable. Full life cycle examination embraced to show a significant change over nothing new. Surface materials and completions are to be chiefly regular and sourced from significant nearby providers where conceivable are in wealth. The outside envelopes utilize brickwork and breathable rendered dividers, subtle elements, timber entryways and windows and metal rooftops. Inside, the habitations will use made joinery, in addition to tile and timber floors. The porch houses are to be confronted in cream/ochre painted render (Keeler and Vaidya 2016). Fundamentally, Insulated Clay, Zego or Hempcrete squares will give a similar impact of overwhelming strong dividers in customary loadbearing brick work, yet another strategy holding fast to development speed, auxiliary effectiveness, great warm limit, water assurance and acoustic control. The same new development framework would be utilized for the carport pads, remotely confronted in a block skin. Reused blocks from the zone will used where conceivable. The improvement will utilize aloof intends to cool and warmth the house on the n ormal day. The utilization of building materials with warm limit, louvered sun shades, execution coating and sun based reflecting gadgets will keep up an agreeable temperature. The floor designs of the houses take into account normal cross?ventilation both on a level plane and vertically (Peuportier, Thiers and Guiavarch 2013). As porch houses, the plans have living spaces confronting the front or back with administrations and lavatories at the inside. The verandas on every veneer accommodate French windows and expansive Bifolding ways to be opened in conjunction with inner sliding ways to take into consideration the cooler air to go through. Remotely, the verandas have louver blinds to empower sun oriented warmth pick up when open or enable air to at present pass while sun shading in summer. Scarf windows in the city faade can be mostly opened to attract the cooler air, while keeping the living arrangements secure. The carport pads will utilize operable sky facing windows vents to debilitate arm freshen up of the building (Zuo and Zhao 2014). Collapsing louvers blades at the Juliet galleries can shut off the living space, while permitting air through. Adelaide's solid daylight enables the houses to profit by characteristic sunlight and decrease superfluous counterfeit light. The building allocations are north?south confronting so the rule living spaces have been orientated toward the north with extensive window openings fronting straight onto a veranda and garden patio. Inside, the patio is lit by the conventional scarf windows on the south side where a formal road facing with clear limits is suitable. On the north side, the window opening are bigger and contain bi?folding entryways (Hwang et al. 2016). The stairwell's sun based smokestack normally lights the dissemination courses, down to the focal kitchen region on the ground floor. Conceptual design The Princes Terrace Adelaide is a momentous joint effort between Defense Housing Australia, The Prince's Trust Australia and the State Government's Urban Renewal Authority (Renewal SA). As the main private project to get a '6 Star Green Star' outline rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, the Terrace epitomizes advancement and world authority in economic plan. Situated in the revived urban region of Bowden in South Australia, The Prince's Terrace Adelaide will give 12 great homes a blend of eight porches and four pads worked as mews behind the patios (Ugur and Leblebici 2017). These homes are anticipated to utilize 50 for every penny less vitality and 50 for every penny less consumable water than a run of the mill urban townhouse, with a carbon impression additionally diminished by more than 40 for each penny when contrasted with a standard house. Green building can allude to any number of angles in both the development procedure and last result of a green building project. One approach to influence the development to process green-accommodating is to legitimately discard squander created amid development and to reuse any recyclable materials utilized as a part of the procedure (Koebel et al. 2015). In the event that a development team takes a shot at an obliteration extend, for instance, it is conceivable that different parts of the structure being torn down can be reused; this is much more naturally cordial than essentially sending this material to the landfill. Development can likewise be green-accommodating by utilizing eco-accommodating materials. Inexhaustible plant materials like bamboo, reused stones and metals, adobe squares, and reused modern products are only a couple of materials which developers have begun to utilize while making green-accommodating structures (Ahn et al. 2013). By utilizing supportable, reused and additionally sustainable materials, developers can keep away from unnecessary waste and lessen a building's natural impression. This project will show the advantage of all around found and reasonable living, with a dream to impact DHA's future tasks, as well as to wind up noticeably a benchmark for private improvement in Australia. The project was authoritatively propelled by His Royal Highness, President of the Prince's Foundation, in November 2015. The Terrace is booked to be finished in November 2017. The proposed location for construction of the residential building is depicted as below: Figure 1: Location for the project (Source: Hoffer 2015, pp. 20) Figure 2: Map view of location of the project The porches will bring an alternate and energizing design and creative component to the Bowden territory, yet in addition will supplement the chronicled parts of the region. It is normal that they will be an exceedingly attractive expansion to Bowden and Adelaide and will show how all around outlined homes can enhance kindness and living in the home while as yet supporting expanded lodging thickness. It is normal that there will be appeal for these homes (Darko and Chan 2016). Australians will ideally esteem the way the patios wed contemporary urban living with the best of Australian urban legacy. They will likewise ideally appreciate the acknowledgment that the advancement gives of the estimation of Adelaide's notable urban boulevards. The construction cost index for residential green buildings have been presented as below: The Prince's Australian Terraces extend contains a column of eight generally styled patio houses along Sixth Street in the North East Quarter of the Bowden improvement. To the back of the site, four appended carports with pads above line an administration mews path. The patio and mews will be of strong brick work development, containing straightforward front?to?rear design formats with liberal floor to roof statures, verandas and overhangs as found in Adelaide's notable urban habitations (Chen, Yang and Lu 2015). These elements enable the structures to be very agreeable through their physical flexibility, considerable warm encapsulation, liquid level and vertical cooling or warming limit and sun shaded regions for open air living. The project intends to take the best of conventional, Australian outline and consolidates it with every one of the solaces of contemporary living. The patios intend to expand on the historical backdrop of terraced homes yet bring them into the future with n aturally inviting and practical outline components (Hwang and Ng 2013). It is normal that this project will manufacture an advancement that is with regards to Adelaide's legacy as well as enhances individuals' personal satisfaction. Conclusion From this study on the development of environmentally conscious building The Princes Terrace, it has been identified that the building will have bring down working expenses through vitality and water productivity. It will be a more advantageous place to live and work with structures that have common wind current and daylight. This project will be a strong speculation, as manageable lodging turns out to be more critical, setting broadly perceived benchmarks will guarantee that future financial specialists will have a strong project for a considerable length of time to come. Materiality is an imperative part of this project, with common, solid and nearby materials chose over any choices where conceivable. These homes are anticipated to utilize 50 for each penny less vitality and 50 for each penny less consumable water than a run of the mill urban townhouse, with a carbon impression additionally decreased by more than 40 for each penny when contrasted with a standard house. Recommendations Some of the recommendations that can be applied for successful development of environmentally conscious building are illustrated as below: Utilization of different recycled products: In order to construct sustainable green building the developers are required to process and utilize different recycled products to minimize the rate of environmental issues. With the help of non-residential design approaches and planning the sustainability of the green buildings will be increased. It also helps to develop an eco-friendly environment for the consumers. Protection on biodiversity: The elements needed to develop the green building should hold eco-friendly products only. Though, green materials and products are much profitable from the business perspectives thus, they should consider different energy efficient elements and materials for construction. Cost management: As green construction is quite cost effective thus, the system developers are required to make a feasibility test and waste management survey before implementing the system for the consumers. The project development team must go through specific list of items and standard guidelines as well. References Ahn, Y.H., Pearce, A.R., Wang, Y. and Wang, G., 2013. Transition Elements Essays - Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding

Transition Elements Transition Elements, series of chemical elements that share similar electron orbital structures and hence similar chemical properties. The transition elements are commonly defined as the 30 elements with atomic numbers 21 to 30, 39 to 48, and 71 to 80. The transition elements exhibit multiple valences or oxidation states typically ranging from +1 to +8 in compounds. In organometallic compounds, consisting of metals bonded to organic species, transition metals sometimes take on negative oxidation states. The transition elements have such typical metallic properties as malleability, ductility, high conductivity of heat and electricity, and metallic luster. They tend to act as reducing agents (donors of electrons), but are less active in this regard than the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, which have valences of +1 and +2, respectively. There are exceptions, as in the case of mercury (Hg), which is a liquid Transition elements in general have high densities and melting points and exhibit magnetic properties. They form both ionic and covalent bonds with anions (negatively charged ions), and such compounds are in general brightly colored.. They have high electrical conductivity because of delocalization of the s electrons similar to what occurs in the alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Another characteristic of the transition metals is the great variety of oxidation states shown in its compounds. Several transition elements and their compounds are important catalysts (see Catalysis) in a variety of industrial processes, especially in the manufacture of petroleum and plastic products, where organic molecules are hydrogenated, oxidized, or polymerized (see Chemical Reaction; Hydrogenation; Polymer). Compounds of titanium, aluminum, or chromium are used in the polymerization of ethylene to form polyethylene. Catalysts containing iron are used in preparing ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen. Molecules containing transition elements are important to the biochemical processes in many living systems, the most familiar example of which is the iron-containing heme complex of hemoglobin, which is responsible for oxygen transport in the blood of all vertebrates and some invertebrates. Most transition metals are colored and make some of their ionic compounds colored. This is because they absorb some of the frequencies of white light. This is attributed to electronic transitions in the d subshell, separating them into different levels of energy. When light is absorbed, an electron is raised from a lower state to a higher state, giving the rise to color. The stored energy is then dissipated through heat. The transition metals also have complex ionic structures because of the availability of d orbitals for participating in chemical bonding.

Current issues in global business effects of population trends and the over aging of many western countries Abstract The global population trend is notably aging. A study of the population trend together with its possible impacts indicates a looming crisis that could have global negative effects on both economic and social factors. In this paper, research is done from secondary sources of information to give a detailed overview of the population trend with specification to some countries in both the west and east. The study reveals that policies should be formulated, either globally or at national levels to subvert the looming crisis due to the aging population.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Current issues in global business: effects of population trends and the over aging of many western countries specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Introduction The demographic structures of a society or a nation define all aspects of life, whether social, economic or political. Institutions and individual persons make decisions that that affects these aspects. The discussion in this writing seeks to discuss effects of population trend and the over-aging of many western countries. With information from current resources like magazines and journals published in March 2011 and current books, the paper will discuss economic impacts of the population trend and the over-aging of the western countries on the global economic environment. The paper will also discuss the political and social impacts of demography. Population Trend Mathematicians examine a trend in terms of a pattern that is adopted by a particular subject. These patterns occasionally have significant implications on a variety of real life issues. Statistical measures like census or sample surveys reveal quantities and their implications on the environment. A case study of a population census revealed in March, 2011 by North Field News had interesting revelations. The data indicated that population growth primarily happens in metropolitan and not in rural areas. In fact, the average growth rate is twenty percent in the cities while the individual county with the highest growth rate recorded only seven percent. This is due to significant migration to the cities (Lindberg 1). According to a catholic journal published on seventeenth March, 2011, the life expectancy in the United States of America has vastly increased with a significant decrease in the death rate. In addition, life expectancy increased to about eighty years in the year 2009. It was further reported that the number of older people are generally on the increase in developing countries. A seven percent average increase is estimated for centenarians in the United States-centenarians are people who are at least one hundred years old (Catholic 1). Recently, Germany reported a crisis due to ageing of the workforce and decreasing population over all. They estimated that the workforce will reduce by about five million in the next decade. Germany is just an example, though a closely similar trend is predicted in many of the western countries (Larry and Kollewe 1).Advertising Looking for critical writing on business economics? An increased life expectancy together with significantly increasing percentage of the elderly in the American population is notable. It can be statistically concluded that the population trend is changing in the United States and other western countries. A sample of the United States and European countries like the Germany, Britain and Spain can be used as an inference to the general population trends in the America and European countries. The increased health and medical facilities in these developed countries can be used to explain this change in population trend that has realized increasing population of the elderly (Elliott and Kollewe 1). A further worry is raised by the fact that a majority of the work force in some of these countries are the elderly who will soon be faced out of the labor system due to their age. Another cause of this trend is the change in social views that led to reduced birth rates in these countries in the past years (Greenberg 1). An almost similar trend in demography is exhibited in other continents. A case study of the demographic trend in Asian countries indicates a similarity to the trend observed in the western countries. The recent earthquake in Japan sent an indicator of the country’s population trend as reported statistics indicated that a majority of the victims of the calamity were the elderly. Either list of the survivors or the missing people in the Japanese earthquake were significantly dominated by the elderly age group. In the 31st march, 2011 article titled â€Å"Asia braces for its date with demographic destiny†, Wheatley Alan pointed out that the most important s tep for Japan in its restructuring agenda should be â€Å"solving the issue ageing society with a low birth rate† (Wheatley 1). According to Alan, Japan is the leading among the ageing nations with a record of thirty per cent of its population being more than sixty years of age as at the year 2010. With its trend, the percentage composition of the Japanese population by the elderly, of more than sixty years of age, is projected to hit thirty seven percent by the year twenty thirty. Close to the Japanese demographic trend is that of South Korea which is projected to have thirty two percent of the population as the elderly (Wheatley 1). China is also reported to exhibit increasing trend in the ageing population. It is estimated that by the year 2015, Chinese elderly population shall have grown from its 12 percent in the year 2010 up to 16 percent (Tsuruoka 1). The changing population trend has been caused by a number of factors such as improved health standards that resulted in higher life expectancy among others. In china for example, the trend is majorly attributed to the one child policy that was established in the earlier years of 1980s. The policy which was harshly enforced by the government ensured reduced birth rate. At the same time, life expectancy increased from previous forty two years and thirty nine years for women and men respectively in the middle of twentieth century to seventy one years and sixty eight years respectively at the close of the twentieth century (Columbia 1).Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Current issues in global business: effects of population trends and the over aging of many western countries specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Effects of the Population Trend in the Western Countries The population trend and the aging factor evidenced in the above mentioned countries all aspects of life and social economic planning. As Bloch Brian reported, these demographic trends have implied effects in business sector of economies. One of the effects of this demographic change is on investment and pension schemes. The social nature of the demographic structure is expected to play an important role in the economic effects of the demographic changes. â€Å"Baby boomers†, reaching retirement age are the key players and the major asset owners in the global economy and they will move their assets in their old age. The worst problem is the spending younger generation who are seen as not keen on savings. The effect of the situation will be a flooded market for assets with no buyers leading to their loss of value. This claim of negative economic effect of demographic changes is however refuted by views that the relationship between the population trend and the economies is not significantly correlated. It is further argued that the demographic factors could have been factored in the current stock prices besides the global investments acro ss borders into the western economies (Bloch 1). The change in population trend also has a significant effect in the labor market. The facing out of the ageing generation who are also the main suppliers of labor force in some countries is expected to result in scarcity in human resource in these countries. The German government through its labor minister confers that the issue of expected labor shortage is real and measures are being considered to import labor force in the future years. This leads to the social impacts of immigration that will witness social interactions of a variety of races and nationalities that will be imported into these western economies (Larry and Kollewe 1). The trend and structure of the western population also have effects in the country’s politics. A survey conducted in Britain indicated that the age factor significantly affected political views. It was noted that a larger percentage of the older people are aligned to conservative views while the y outh are significantly not interested in politics and a majority of them don’t vote. The older generation which is increasing in population is also the most financially stable and their alignment to a political party would influence politics in terms of campaign funding during elections. The political effects of the demographic structure are actually significant globally (McLean and McMillan 6).Advertising Looking for critical writing on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More One of the effects of the Asian aging population is the high cost of sustaining the social welfare of the elderly. This is specifically so as the elderly needs expenditure on them while their contribution to the economy is either minimal or zero. Another significant effect of the aging population is the reduced labor force into the economy. With a large percentage of the population aging, the active number in terms of human resource supply is on the decrease. This phenomenon has been identified as a threat that can â€Å"impede economic development by reducing the size of productive ages† (Hermalin 6). Conclusion The population trend in America and the European countries has been changing over time with the population of the elderly increasing while that of the younger people is on the decrease. The trend is caused by reduced birth rates and increased health facilities that have increased the life expectancy in the countries. The demographic change however has effects in econ omic, social and political aspects which will be more significant in future if the population trend and the ageing of the western countries continue in the same direction. Similarly, the trend is realized in the Asian countries. The population of the elderly is increasing while that of the youth is on the decline. There also therefore exists a consistently predictable crisis in the future economic and social status in Asia. Necessary measures and policies should therefore be taken to ensure that the threat that the demographic trend is posing is countered before it explodes into a global crisis. Bloch, Brian. PUBLIC FINANCIAL MGMT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

PUBLIC FINANCIAL MGMT - Essay Example However, budgeting numbers are discussed frequently in the scramble for government funding (as in private funding), but the ultimate emphasis relies more on obtaining the funding rather than understanding how effectively the dollars are spent. In terms of Congress, the process of cutting costs involves: ‘producing timely and auditable financial statements, asset management, improving reporting and resource allocation, and strategic planning. In terms of financial control in the private sector, these are the primary concerns, but in the public world they typically garner less attention. (Knubel, John) In Private financial management, the key mission to be fulfilled is the increase in book value and stock prices. Excellence in financial management is regarded as a primary concern. Even in the cases of nonprofits, where stock values are not of concern, financial performance is still represented as the scorecard for success in competition. Market share, accounting, and output-orien ted statistics are carefully monitored and scrutinized. Executives will often use financial data acquired to evaluate the effectiveness of the current management team. It is management’s role to create positive momentum in stockholder wealth while minimizing costs and providing excellent customer service. (Knubel, John) It is clear to see that both the public and private sectors place a lot of emphasis on raising budget capital, yet they differ in their lack of accounting control and execution after the funding is committed. The fiscal capacity of governments is based on a multitude of factors including industrial capacity, personal incomes, population, and natural resource wealth. When governments establish their fiscal policy, understanding the fiscal capacity is a pertinent step. Identifying the fiscal capacity gives governments a better perspective of what programs and services they should offer the public. This process also helps to determine the necessary tax rates to p rovide towards certain levels and projects. The theory of fiscal capacity flows down even to the smallest levels of governments and groups, such as school districts, to determine what type of resources they will be able to provide. For about 15 years, Belgium was able to achieve a great degree of fiscal consolidation with a sizeable reduction of the debt-to GDP ratio. This fiscal consolidation was able to take place amongst the transition from a unitary state to a federal state. By utilizing annual agreements between all levels of government, the federal government substantially reduced its deficit while sub-federal governments simultaneously roughly balanced their budgets. However, in the case of Belgium the sharing of tax revenues was set up so that non-federal governments ended up with the fastest growing tax revenues. This led to all levels of government being faced with a minimal amount of budgetary pressure to rein in spending. Overall, the fiscal consolidation left the countr y with two main confronts. The first was to ensure a fair share of public spending burden between all levels of government, including upcoming ageing costs. The second was to increase the efficiency of spending at all levels by reducing economic disincentives, and by increasing co-operation and co-ordination in policy and public service provision. (OCED economic surveys: Belgium) One can see that after taxes are accumulated and appropriated, the real challenges of fiscal policy begin. It is no easy task to oversee and

Coursework on Change Management Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

On Change Management - Coursework Example The change in an organization can be in various forms. It can be in form of the top management, it can be in form of individual personnel who leaves due to certain reasons, could be the cut in funds from the donors side, and it could be as a result the entire supply chain supply and other exterior elements that affect the organization and its results in a direct manner. Ages ago Charles Darwin stated the need for adaptation and adjustment by stating that â€Å"it is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones who are most responsive† (Macmillan & Shaw.pg 11, 2004). To mitigate the effect of change, a completely separate discipline exists that focuses on the work plane for acting according to the change and further proceeding from that point on according to the requirements. The implementation of incumbent discipline enables identifying and further, implementation of all those elements which need to be taken care of. Change management allows c reating a work plan for mitigating and narrowing down the gap between the situation at hand and the desired situation which would lead to the successful results. Resistance to change is a natural phenomenon regardless of the discipline of management or other field of life. The mankind by nature resists change in its ambience; however change at times is very important for the survival of human beings as well as the endeavors they are involved in. Identifying the need for change is also an important decision. The timings of decision to change any variable is very vital. On time implementation can save the ship while out of time and random change can result in catastrophic disasters. In a given organization, change management could be about the change in its policies, managing change in terms of the change of strategy and work plan, manual operations to automated handling, in terms of the partners involved in project, hence change management is that integral part of the organization th at addresses all the important aspects of organization (Paton, Paton, & McCalman, 2008). An important feature of change management is it’s in time information and exposure. This principle works in such a way that demands actions at the right time and right occasion. Bringing about innovation in work is also a kind of change, since it involves doing something out of the ordinary and routine. Certain pre-requisites if followed in a proper manner provide a road map to effective change management. Involvement of stakeholders: The involvement of stakeholders who are directly or indirectly associated with it is of vital importance. This helps maintaining harmony in the working process and leads to more effective outputs intended from the change process (Green, 2007). These include highlighting the areas that need improvement in form of change, followed by the strategy to be adopted. Boston Beer Essay Example for Free

Boston Beer Essay The biggest strength of the company is the brand image it has among the consumers . Boston Beer , specifically the Samuel Adams ,well known from the superior quality and expensive ingredients used along with the traditional brewing techniques which give it an excellent flavor , which cannot be easily copied by the other competitors . In addition the use of less water in its products also has given it a positive advantage in terms of product quality . Weaknesses: Opportunities: The idea to continue to grow in the already overcrowded market of specialty brewers is critical to the success of this company. There are currently over thirteen hundred micro-brewers in the United States with The Boston Beer Company ranked number one in overall sales and sixth in the overall domestic market. Currently the Heineken and Corona brands rank ahead of Samuel Adams in this category in the world market. In the near future the company is leaning towards owning more breweries and cutting back on the contract brewers. Currently the different cost associated with contract brewing involves raw materials, excise taxes and deposits for pallets and kegs and specialized equipment required for beer production. Brewery ownership would involve significant capital investment which could easily exceed $50 million for the combination of purchase, expansion and improvement, or for original construction. Threats: In recent years, all brewers have had to contend with a stagnant beer market and per-capita consumption that is on the decline. The reasoning behind this ongoing trend are attributed to underlying factors such as the low carbohydrate diet rave that has taken off in recent years, the unstable economy, and an increase in market share of wines and spirits. BBC should attack the light beer market. Light beer is the largest selling type of beer on the market, and accounting for five of top ten best-selling beers. As light beer becomes more popular, BBC should listen to customers and follow the trend not to be behind, while others all producing light line of beers to catch more potential customers. BBC already has their own light beer, so they can save time and money to develop the whole new product. From the taste testing, Lightship receives the highest mark, implying that it has a strong potential to success when they approach in right way. It is more about how they introduce the product to the market, rather than inventing a new product. To survive in the strong competition and grab customers’ attention, BBC clearly need to differentiate the image of Lightship from other light beers. Research shows that most of current customers of light beers want different aspects from what Lightship is designed to be. Instead of targeting the same customers with other light beers, Lightship needs to focus on other, untouched customer segment, who seek for full flavor and body with lower calories. As the market tends to trade up to high-end brands, BBC’s brand image will help launch Lightship, emphasizing its high quality and authenticity. To attract first-try customers’, the label should be changed to be more vibrant and energetic, stressing the major images that people think of light beers. There is lot more to gain by having light beer segment than to lose by giving up. Each form of research performed gives the specific contribution depending on its characteristics. A taste test is exploratory research to gain ideas and customer insights. It is designed to explore customer’s perspectives, especially how customers sees Lightship among other competitors in this case. The result shows how much drinking beer counts for part of their lives and who the potential customers of Lightship are, and the valuable comments about major characteristics of beer that they find in each competing brand. This test tells what value customers seek for the most in light beer segment, giving ideas about how BBC should approach to market. Despite of strong brand recognition of Amstel Light, Lightship is ranked in first place, implying BBC should adopt a new way of advertising to increase the brand awareness. This test would be better with questions asking what aspects participants think Lightship should have. ZMET provides hidden knowledge with more depth by eliciting customers’ deepest feelings and emotions about the product. ZMET is a projective method that uncovers the thoughts and feelings associated with the experience of light beers. Even though there are some down sides of drinking beers, people find a lot more positive sides as they see drinking light beer as some kind of rewards, refreshing and energetic activity. This implies there is enough potential for light beer segment to grow much further. ZMET result also gives direction and guideline to BBC. Conducting ZMET certainly contribute to project underlying attitudes and feelings to help BBC to understand their target customers more deeply. However, because of small sample size, there could be limitation of getting broader perspectives. I would divide the sample by age and beer consumption level to get more clear ideas to attract more focused target intensely and effectively. Another qualitative research HBS students conduct is retail research, done through interviews, which generates general ideas of current market situation and how competitors are doing. This also gives brief hints of the price points Lightship should target. I would recommend HBS student to divide the sample groups by visiting habits of customers for each type of retailers. If BBC can find out the place where most potential customers of Lightship frequently goes, it would help reduce waste and backlog of the products produced in distribution process. For example, if customers of sport bar seem to prefer light beer than customers of chic French restaurant do, BBC can save their time and money by focusing on developing improved distribution line with sport bar. The summary collage of ZMET gives valuable ideas that consumers have about their experience with light beers. The most important image associated with light beer is energy and energy giving by offering refreshment. Another image the light beers have is being simple yet great in appearance and in taste. There is duality of the experience, while they see it as rewards but effects of alcohol makes them self-conscious. Sailing represents both calmness and thirst quenching flavor which is refreshing and cold with structure. There are several images representing group activity. People see drinking light beer as the activity that they do with others, which give them group awareness. They want to be in group but to be different from others by having control. People think that the types of beer they drink tell their social status, providing them with group identity. The dilemma of light beer is shown through the hula-hoops representing the balance and control. There are tensions between control and need of releasing inhibition, blandness and simplicity, need for self and group identity, being active and being passive. Since light beers seem to be more attractive to energetic young generation and people who do not drink beers regularly and do not enjoy the heavy taste of beer, having more knowledge of their potential customer group helps BBC to target their customers more effectively without wasting effort of targeting wrong customers. BBC also could have done research about what feature of Lightship people like and dislike. The feature that customers like about Lightship should be kept, and the feature with lower mark given should be altered or discontinued. What BBC can do now is to consider the appropriate way of advertising for Lightship. Research results prove that light beer market is still growing and there is nothing wrong with the quality of Lightship. It turns out to be the awareness of Lightship is low, implying their advertising methods are not eye-catching. By altering their way of advertising, BBC can gain more trial customers, who can be turned into loyal customers. Lightship also needs to target different customer segment, which looks for full body and flavor beer with lower calories. Rather than fighting directly with strong rivals, BBC should target other customer segments by stressing its unique quality and flavor. It is worth trying launching light beer segment.

Mike Davis And The LAPD :: essays research papers

The general assumption that people make of the role that police officers play is that they are there to â€Å"Protect and Serve† the community. What people many times do not realize is that in reality a large percentage of police officers in Los Angels, including the Chiefs of Police, do their jobs with a different intention in mind. Police officers as well as politicians claim to be working hard on keeping drugs off the streets when in reality they are bringing on the violence themselves by instigating problems that are not really there. Bringing violence to the community is to their convenience because when crimes are solved and people are arrested police officers are portrayed by the media as the â€Å"heroes†. Not only is the LAPD committing a large number of acts of corruption but they are all set toward youth of color. The ideal role of a police officer is to help and protect the people of the community for which they work to create a safe environment but when members of the LAPD are biased and only interested in their own refinement, innocent youth are left to pay the consequences. Police officers mainly target their corruption scandals toward groups of young males of color because they find it easier to arrest them strictly because of their physical appearance and use probable cause as their excuse. From there, â€Å"Kids are humiliatingly forced to ‘kiss the sidewalk’ or spread eagle against police cruisers while officers check their names against computerized files of gang members.†(Davis, 81) If their names and addresses are not yet entered they are added to the roster as well â€Å"†¦for future surveillance.†(Davis, 81)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There are two major Black gangs in Los Angeles, which are known universally as the â€Å"Bloods† and the â€Å"Crips†, they are most known for their â€Å"organization of the sale of crack and out shooting the police with huge arsenals of Uzi and Mac-10 automatics.† (Davis, 81) Because they distinguish themselves by the Bloods color-coding their clothes in red and the Crips in blue, police officers have used this against many black males wearing the color of these gang rivals. Many times the Chief of Police gives orders for the officers to â€Å"stop and interrogate anyone who they suspect is a gang member, basing their assumptions on their dress or their use of gang hand signals.† (Davis, 83) Law enforcement has also been found to be deliberately provoking gang violence by writing over Crip graffiti with red, which is the Bloods color, or Blood graffiti with the Crip color.

Environmental toxicology Essay

Environmental toxicology refers to specific organs as target organs. This is an organ that has the highest probability of being affected by exposure to a specific substance. Target organ toxicity refers to the negative effects a chemical has on that target organ after entry into the body (Hodgson, 2010). There are multiple organs such as the liver which are targeted simply because of ease of access. Any organ that can be accessed through less guarded cell walls or higher levels of lipids are more susceptible to entry by toxicants. High traffic organs like the kidneys and liver make it easy as they receive and filter all blood therefore taking the toxin in large doses to cleanse the body. The primary purpose of the kidneys and liver is to expel toxins and therefore this action is there specialty making them more susceptible. The human body has a specialized detoxification process that includes a specific target organ, the liver. The liver is a primary regulator of chemical levels in the blood and it also excretes bile that helps the breakdown of fat (Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, 2012). This breakdown helps to prepare the fats for the final stages of digestion and ultimately absorption. The liver has two sources of blood flowing threw it at all times, oxygenated blood from the hepatic artery and nutrient-rich blood from the hepatic portal vein. Approximately 13% of blood in the body is held in the liver at any moment (Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, 2012). The blood that leaves the stomach and intestines will be passed through the liver before it is allowed to travel anywhere else in the body. In the liver nutrients and toxins are broken down so they can be used easily the body. Waste is not only excreted through the bile but also in the blood which will travel to the kidneys and leave the body as urine (Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, 2012). The liver has many very important duties it carries out such as cleaning the blood of toxins and bacteria, and producing the bile that carries away waste and breaks down fat (Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, 2012). With all of this toxic intervention the liver an be overworked and disease can overcome, such as chronic liver disease (Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, 2012). The conditions that lead to chronic liver disease are vast but they fall into five groups (Chronic liver, 2011). The first group is the viral group classification which includes conditions such as hepatitis B and C (Chronic liver, 2011). The second group is the metabolic group which includes diseases such as Wilson’s disease (Chronic liver, 2011). The third group is the autoimmune response group which includes primary biliary cirrhosis sufferers (Chronic liver, 2011). The fourth group is the toxin-related group which includes alcoholism and the last is the miscellaneous group with ailments such as right heart failure (Chronic liver, 2011). Within these groups there is a silent killer though which raises the risk for that group. That is the toxin-related group because alcoholism leads to cirrhosis and then to hepatitis (Chronic liver, 2011). That group alone takes a person through three groups in one shot. While researching toxicants and reactions there have been some similarities found. Many toxicants affect the lungs, skin, and eyes. Take for instance Sulfur Dioxide, Asbestos, and gasoline. Sulfur Dioxide is a colorless gas with a choking odor and suffocating qualities (Air Gas, 2012). It is toxic to humans even at low concentrations. The target organs of Sulfur Dioxide are the lungs, upper respiratory tract, the skin, and eyes (Air Gas, 2012). At the low dose of 8ppm coughing will commence leading to severe respiratory tract issues as well as eye and skin burns (Air Gas, 2012). Another toxic substance is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral called asbestos (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). The most common types are Chrysotile and Amosite. It targets the respiratory system, eyes, and is known as a carcinogen because it causes lung cancer. With chronic exposure dyspnea will begin, interstitial fibrosis and restricted pulmonary functions will be observed as well as finger clubbing, and eye irritation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). Gasoline is a volatile combination of flammable liquid hydrocarbons. Taken from crude petroleum it is highly used for internal-combustion engines. No matter the grade gasoline affects the eyes, skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, nose, throat, the respiratory tract, the central nervous system, the liver and kidneys (Amerada Hess Corporation, 2004). In the eyes the effects are moderate causing irritation. When it comes to the skin it depends on the exposure, if acute gasoline is mild but with prolonged contact toxic amounts can be absorbed and damage can be made. If the gasoline is ingested there are many major issues that will follow (Amerada Hess Corporation, 2004). First the breathing of liquid drops into the lungs when vomiting occurs, which can cause chemical pneumonia, lung damage, respiratory failure and ultimately death (Amerada Hess Corporation, 2004). This is not all ingestion can cause though as gastrointestinal issues can arise such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and even brain damage (Amerada Hess Corporation, 2004). If the ingestion is a chronic level of exposure convulsions could follow, even loss of consciousness, coma, and respiratory arrest. Another means of exposure is through inhalation. This can cause serious issues with the nose, throat, lungs and once again the respiratory tract (Amerada Hess Corporation, 2004). It can also cause headaches, dizziness and in vertigo, unconsciousness that leads to coma and even death. At the most chronic of levels gasoline that contains benzene can cause anemia or leukemia. If the liver or kidneys of the exposed person have already been compromised they can also become a target organ (Amerada Hess Corporation, 2004).

Macbeth sountrack Essay

In act 1 scene 5 is when Lady Macbeth found out the news about how Macbeth would become the Thane of Cawdor and king for the witches. I chose the song â€Å"I Want It All† by Queen to represent this scene. Part of the songs lyrics are â€Å"I want it all, I want it all, I want it all, and I want it now†. Lady Macbeth heard the news that he would be king and she right away wanted to accomplish that. She didn’t want to wait but instead she take the steps necessary to make Macbeth king as soon as possible. In act 1 scene 6 is when the king and others arrive at Macbeth’s castle to stay the night. I chose the song â€Å"Let Em In† by Paul McCartney to represent this scene. The songs lyrics are â€Å"Someones knockin at the door, somebodys ringin the bell, do me a favor, open the door and let em in†. This perfectly describes that scene because when King Duncan arrives Lady Macbeth is there to let them in. She already has a plan figured out for them and can’t wait to execute it. In act 3 scene 4 I chose the song â€Å"I’m Going Slightly Mad† by Queen to represent this scene. In the scene Macbeth is having a dinner party and notices that all the seats are taken. When he sees that his seat is taken by the ghost of Banquo he starts talking to the ghost who is invisible to everyone else. The lyrics â€Å"I’m going slightly mad† describe how Macbeth was acting really strange and made the guests question him. The ghost later came back and made Macbeth have an outburst again alarming the guests which sent them home. A symbol that is portrayed in this play is the weather. The weather plays a role in which if something bad is coming up a storm might appear. The song â€Å"The Thunder Rolls† by Garth Brooks reminds of when the witches would enter and a storm would move in. Also the night that Duncan got murdered, a terrible storm came in that night indicating that something bad happened. These natural occurrences are hints to the audience that something isn’t right and the song does a good job of describing a thunder storm. In act 1 scene 7 is when Lady Macbeth told Macbeth to be a man and kill Duncan. â€Å"When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would; Be so much more the man†. I chose the song â€Å"I’ll Make a Man out Of You† from the movie Mulan. This song is about training men to become manlier and this is what Lady Macbeth wanted Macbeth to do. She wanted him to become manlier and do what she tells him. I chose the song â€Å"Tragedy† by the Bee Gees to describe the whole play. The genre of this play is tragedy and this song describes â€Å"when you lose control† of everything. Macbeth took things too far and lost everyone that was close him. The lyric â€Å"With no one beside you, you’re goin’ nowhere† reminds when Lady Macbeth died then he really didn’t have anyone else. Since he had no one with him for support, the only way he could go was down.

Hard Work Pays Off Professor Ramos Blog

Hard Work Pays Off It was an early morning in 2016 in a small town called Beaumont. A fresh new week to start off the winter season. It was not too hot, not too cold but just the right weather for a young overweight sophomore to start his first day of wrestling. A day that he would most likely remember for the rest of his life. This young fat boy is me Timothy. I was 5’9, weighed about 240 pounds, and was mainly made up of fat and had a little bit of muscle at the time. I barely had any stamina to begin with. I did have a year of football experience which honestly did nothing to really help, except for the weight lifting I was taught. Furthermore, nothing I knew at the time could help me to endure wrestling. If you didn’t have any drive, or a sense of will power, than you were done right there in the first day of practice. In any other sport, if you didn’t make the cut you were out. Yet the wrestling team wasnt like any other sport. Students that didnt make the wrestling team had quit, they were never cut. At the time I didn’t really believe that wrestling was that tough. So I asked one of the coaches if I could join the team and he said â€Å"Yeah, if you want you could start early before the season starts.† I said, â€Å"Yes, of course.† Looking back, I didn’t really think about the decision I made to start wreslting before the actual season began but, it literally saved me from a week embarrassment during the junior varsity practice. I assumed the coach was looking for students that would join because their JV team wasn’t fully equipped, which means there weren’t enough students on the team. The team needed roughly twenty-four students and they barely had half. The reason coaches wanted roughly twenty-four students is because if anyone got hurt, they can have a â€Å"second string† to take their place if needed. Practice started right after school at 3:15 p.m so we barely had enough time to get dressed and stretch. I felt fine at the beginning of practice, but it would quickly turn upside down once we started the conditioning part of practice. This was no ordinary conditioning because we wouldn’t just run, we would sprint, we would carry each other about 100 yards and then switch and we also run up and down stairs. When that was all over, if the coach felt that we didn’t give it our all, we would run some more however he saw fit. Once we were done with this, we would continue with our warm ups which was a five to ten minutes of a â€Å"light† workout, but it didn’t feel like an easy workout after all the conditioning we had just done. After this we started to stretch out parts of our body that I have never stretched before like our necks, our back, and even our wrists. While we were stretching our necks we were basically forcing our backs to get into an angle where we could stretch our necks and funny enough it also stretched out our wrists as well. After stretching, our coach went over the rules of wrestling which took about ten to twenty minutes. The way he was describing it was short, simple, but very confusing to someone new. Next, we got into pairs and he showed us a couple of moves, which he expected us to know after several minutes of practicing with one another. After several more new moves and several more attempts to learn the moves with our partner, we were moving on toward the end of practice which meant live wrestling. Live wrestling is when we get in groups of four with people that are closest to your weight where two people are wrestling and two people are coaching and making sure the two people that are wrestling aren’t crashing into other groups. Yet, my experience wasn’t the best because the people in my group were all varsity players and had a lot more experience than I did. So when it was my turn to wrestle, I was basically taking a beating every single time. I was also told by Danny, one of the varsity wrestlers, that I was very â€Å"passive and not aggressive enough.† Which I later took into consideration. When live wrestling was over, we would do another ten to fifteen minutes of conditioning, which included different types of pushups, sit-ups, burpees, and other types of exercises that were extremely hard. After my first day of practice, I felt good in a way but I also very exhausted. From that point forward I would continue doing wrestling and continue to grow with my teammates, even though my coach thought I was going to quit because for the first few weeks he would always ask me â€Å"Are you going to come back tomorrow?† After a couple weeks of off-season practice, we would finally hit the regular wrestling season, which meant I would be practicing with the junior varsity coach and junior varsity wrestlers. This practice started at 5:45 p.m. when it was basically almost night time. When it first started, we did the regular warm ups we did during the off-season but we ended up doing more conditioning than the varsity players. We also practice with the varsity girls which was very awkward but we adapted pretty quickly. After weeks of non-stop practice and extra conditioning, I finally get to have my first wrestling match which was during a dual wrestling tournament. This is where two schools would line up all their best wrestlers and match them by weight with the other schools wrestlers and the way it worked out is with whoevers wrestlers would win, that team would gain a point and whoever gets the most points is the team that will win the tournament. Our very first team dual was against Big Bear and they had a full-sized team just like ours. We started the dual with the lighter weights and then moved on to the heavy weights, which gave me time to take in the experience that I was wrestling with my team. Not only was I soaking in the experience, but it also gave me another reason to do my best seeing that everyone before me gave it their all so I didnt want to disappoint them. When it came time for me to wrestle, since I was the very last one, I was hiped and full of energy until I was informed that I was wrestling a girl. She was a few inches taller than me and looked more muscular than I did. It was one of the most uncomfortable experiences I have ever had. Yet since I already wrestled varsity girls on our team, it wasn’t too bad but it was still weird because I was wrestling in front of an audience and my team. I didn’t want to hurt her but at the same time, I couldn’t let my team down. So I dragged out the match because I was trying to find a way to win by not using too much force. In the third period I finally pinned her in the last couple of seconds. After this match I had several more matches and I did not hold anything back and was able to pin my opponents in the first period. Wrestling has been a big part of my life since and has changed me physically and mentally. I started off at 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing around 240 pounds and after three years of wrestling I grew two inches and lost a couple of pounds. Now I stand at 5 feet 11 inches and weigh about 200 pounds. But my physique is not the only thing that has changed. My stamina, strength, flexibility, and durability has also changed for the better. Because of wrestling, I have become more humble of how I act and treat others. I’m much more respectful now than I was before and I’m also a bit more outgoing. Wrestling has made me a better person and has also made me continue to workout consistently, which helps me manage my everyday life.
